The ALPLA Learning and Development Hub was completed as a transformative engineering project delivering a modern, highly technical training and operations facility for ALPLA’s North American operations in Iowa City, Iowa. The project supported ALPLA’s investment in workforce development by creating a purpose-built environment integrating classroom spaces, training labs, technology systems, and site infrastructure into a cohesive campus. Our team provided multidisciplinary engineering services and served as the owner’s representative from conceptual planning through final inspection and occupancy.

The project presented coordination and construction challenges related to its technical complexity, phased occupancy needs, and high level of building systems integration. Construction administration required ongoing coordination of electrical, mechanical, technology, and life safety systems during installation, testing, and commissioning. Multiple punch list walkthroughs and discipline-specific inspections addressed items ranging from access control and lighting controls to exterior civil elements such as paving, storm infrastructure, and electric vehicle charging readiness.

Innovative solutions were applied through an actively engaged construction administration process and frequent site presence. Our team coordinated revisions to mechanical and electrical layouts, responded to RFIs, reviewed submittals, and documented field conditions to support timely decision making. Civil engineering support extended beyond design to include construction staking, verification of site grades, and coordination of driveway, paving, lighting, and utility adjustments as field conditions evolved.

The project concluded with successful inspections, punch list completion, and issuance of certificates of occupancy, allowing ALPLA to begin occupying the facility while final items were completed. The completed Learning and Development Hub now serves as a long-term investment in employee training, operational excellence, and regional economic development.
